Surgical orthodontics is needed when orthodontics alone cannot correct a problem, usually having to do with bad bites, jawbone abnormalities, and malocclusion. Just like a movie star can’t make a movie by herself, braces may need a little help, too.
In this case, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is necessary to move the jawbones into the correct positions and the orthodontist is needed to move the teeth into the correct position. In these instances, both are necessary to have a successful result.
Smiles Hollywood Orthodontics has treated hundreds of surgical orthodontic patients over the past 20 years and is very experienced in this type of treatment. We have long-standing relationships with local oral maxillofacial surgeons and can help guide you to the surgeon that is right for you. Because this is a very specialized kind of treatment, not every orthodontist has our level of experience. If orthognathic surgery is recommended, you’ll want to choose orthodontists who a history with the procedure—Dr. Stephanie Crise and Dr. Jessica Downs.
Drs. Crise and Downs have treated hundreds of surgical orthodontic patients, are very familiar with the process, and are here to guide you through it. With any surgery, there are risks that will be discussed with you by the surgeon. The rewards speak for themselves—improved bite function for chewing and eating, as well as improved aesthetics.
Your Oral Surgical Procedure
Surgical orthodontics begins with Dr. Crise. At Smiles Hollywood Orthodontics, first we place braces for approximately one to one-and-a-half years. Then, you will visit an oral maxillofacial surgeon for surgery that will be performed with the braces still in place. After surgery, you will return to our McKinney orthodontic office for finishing and detailing for another six to nine months. Then your bright Hollywood smile is revealed!
Orthognathic surgery is a medical procedure. We can assist with checking your medical insurance for coverage information since, if covered, it would be under medical insurance, not dental. Modern jaw surgery procedures are much preferred over the days when jaws were wired shut. This is no longer the case, so healing time is much faster and easier. You can expect about a week of downtime and then get back to school or work.
